Full-time. Day, evening, and weekend shifts required. Non-exempt status.

$16 per hour minimum


The Youth Services Manager manages all functions of children and teen services, including developing and implementing a wide variety of programs, providing reference services and readers’ advisory to children, teens, and their parents/caregivers; and overseeing the development, organization, and maintenance of children and teen materials.

The Youth Services Manager works under the supervision of the library director. This position may include supervisory duties as assigned.


  • Select, oversee, and maintain the library’s collection of youth materials.
  • Plan, organize, present and supervise the presentation of educational and entertaining youth programs and services.
  • Remain up-to-date on emerging library trends and technology. Track data and usage to determine community needs.
  • Work collaboratively with library staff to coordinate the delivery of excellent services to youth and their parents/caregivers.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key library stakeholders, including the local school district, preschool providers, daycares, and local businesses.
  • Hold necessary certifications with the Indiana State Library for professional positions.
  • Participate in training and continuing education opportunities.
  • Enthusiastically support the library’s mission, vision, values, and strategic goals.
  • Understand and follow established library and personnel policies, procedures, and work standards.
  • Promote the library’s collection and services in a welcoming, friendly, and helpful manner.
  • Project a positive image of the library through behavior and appearance.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with patrons, staff, and the community.
  • Utilize the library’s integrated library system (ILS) to perform circulation tasks including (but not limited to) issuing library cards, checking materials in and out, retrieving and re-shelving items, and preparing and processing holds and inter-library loans.
  • Proactively assist patrons with equipment and software including computers, printers, and copiers.
  • Answer reference questions and demonstrate how to access information in various formats.
  • Provide excellent customer service.

Qualifications, Education, and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or above; MLIS-holding (or in-process) candidates preferred.
  • Public or school library experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of literature, developmental stages, and readers’ advisory practices for youth ages 0-17.
  • Experience with and enthusiasm for working with youth and the public.
  • Experience, interest, and skill using new technologies.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, especially with children, teenagers, and their caregivers.
  • Experience with standard software programs.
