The Clarksville Library Manager is responsible for daily operations at the Jeffersonville Township Public Library’s Clarksville location. Responsibilities for this position include providing excellent customer service to library patrons, supervising, training, and scheduling staff, overseeing collection development in both youth and adult services, overseeing all library programming and special events, occasional grant writing, engaging with the Clarksville community and facility and grounds maintenance.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Education

  • ALA-accredited, MLS degree
  • Indiana State Public Library certificate 2 or higher or qualifications necessary to become certified at this level

Experience

  • Three years of professional librarian experience
  • One year of supervisory experience preferred

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Broad knowledge of professional library principles, methods, information resources, and practices
  • Familiarity of collection development practices and methods
  • Working knowledge of library policies and procedures and the ability to explain these policies to the public and staff
  • Understanding of managerial policies and practices related to the management of a branch library
  • Knowledge of public relations and customer service methods, practices, and procedures
  • Proficient in computer systems and applications including ILS, Internet, online databases, MS Office, and email; efficient keyboarding skills
  • Exceptional knowledge of current and emerging library technology
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, officials, contractors, volunteers, community organizations, and the general public
  • Ability to provide clear, concise oral and written communication

DESCRIPTION OF TASKS:

  • Develops goals, plans, programs, services, and procedures for the Clarksville location
  • Assures compliance with Jeffersonville Township Public Library policies
  • Interprets library policies and procedures to the staff and public
  • Uses appropriate and effective problem-solving skills
  • Assists in hiring of Clarksville Library staff
  • Trains, schedules, and supervises Clarksville Library staff including defining goals, setting priorities, ensuring that staff uphold policies and procedures
  • Participates in all daily service and support operations within the Clarksville Library
  • Provides leadership to the Clarksville Library by developing and maintaining a positive, helpful, and professional approach to the overall community as well as individual library patrons
  • Develops projections of resources and personnel necessary to meet established goals and objectives
  • Assists and supports public services librarians in planning and implementing library programming
  • Facilitates a library book club
  • Participates in outreach events
  • Administers materials budget
  • Works closely with the library director and other department managers to assure services are responsive to patrons’ needs
  • Attends and contributes to Administrative Planning Team, departmental/unit meetings; takes part in special projects and committees as assigned
  • Ensures that the building and grounds of the Clarksville Library are properly maintained
  • Oversees and participates in collection development of Clarksville Library materials
  • Collaborates with local artists to provide art gallery exhibits at the Clarksville Library location
  • Prepares reports and statistics for the Clarksville Library
  • Approves public meeting room reservations
  • Approve employee time cards and leave time
  • Appraises employee performance and completes evaluations of subordinates
  • Assists patrons in the use of library collections, computers, and provides basic reference service
  • Oversees and performs circulation duties
  • Establishes and maintains ongoing contacts with local civic groups and community organizations
  • Recommends, plans, and implements new technologies to meet changing needs
  • Participates in library committees
  • Makes occasional presentations to the public
  • Participates in professional conferences and workshops to keep informed of changes in the library field
  • Reads professional literature
  • Performs related lower-level work as required
  • Performs other duties as assigned

ESSENTIAL SKILLS:

  • Must be able to effectively communicate with others
  • Must be physically able to retrieve materials from library shelving
  • Must have physical mobility to receive and transport materials
  • Must have the manual dexterity to operate library equipment
  • Must have adequate eyesight, depth perception, and color vision to perform duties
  • Must be able to view a computer monitor and perform mouse and keyboarding tasks with dexterity and accuracy for extended periods of time
  • Must be able to turn, balance, push, handle, reach, stoop, walk, sit, and stand for extended periods of time
  • Must be able to lift 25 lbs. and push a fully loaded book truck, which can weigh over 100 lbs.
