Overview
The Brown County Public Library is looking for an energetic, detail oriented, and highly motivated team player as a Children and Teen Librarian. This position oversees all functions of children and teen services including collection development, creating and implementing a wide variety of programs for children and teens, providing reference help and readers’ advisory support to children, teens, caregivers and families, and outreach to schools in Brown County and at community events.
Salary & Benefits
$38,000-$42,000 ($20.88 – $23.07)
Medical, dental and vision insurance covered at 90% by library, 5 weeks PTO and participation in Public Employee Retirement Fund and Hoosier Start deferred compensation program.
Qualifications
1. Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited college or university with a specialization in children and young adult services.
2. Minimum of two years of professional library experience, preferred.
3. Indiana certification LC 3, required
Requirements
1. Satisfactory criminal history background check appropriate for working with children.
2. Significant public library children’s services and programming work experience.
3. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with library patrons and staff members.
4. Ability to work independently and efficiently, without direct supervision.
5. Broad knowledge of public library collection development with extensive knowledge of resources of particular interest to children, teens, and their caregivers, including software, online databases, and Internet sites. Must possess the ability to effectively teach young audiences in the use of such items. Advanced computer skills are required.
6. Excellent interpersonal skills and public service manner, especially with children, teenagers, and their caregivers. This includes the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in written form.
7. Ability to plan and present effective programs that appeal to children and teens, such as storytelling and book-talking in front of small and large groups.
8. Ability to coordinate large events with community partners.
9. Must have a valid driver’s license and safe driving record to drive personal vehicle or library van to programming sites.
10. Flexibility to work a varied schedule, evening and weekend hours may be required.
Responsibilities
1. Manage the selection and deselection of children and teen library materials consistent with the library’s mission and policies.
2. Develop, facilitate, and collect statistics on a variety of library programs for children of all ages, including school visits, summer reading challenge, and other special programs onsite, offsite, and at our branch library.
3. Work collaboratively with other library staff to plan, organize and coordinate the library summer reading challenge and other special events as needed.
4. Assist and instruct children and teens in the use of library services and resources.
5. Assist the public with the use of library computers, databases and software while at the reference desk.
6. Participate in meetings and attend conferences with other library personnel.
7. Connect with Brown County Schools, collaborate with teachers regarding programs, and arrange library visits.
8. Establish contact with other community organizations servicing children, teens, and their caregivers.
9. Cooperate as a team member with all library staff in performing any duty essential to the achievement of efficient library operations, which may include helping out at the circulation desk and making deliveries to our branch library.
10. Seek and write appropriate grants to support programming, oversee expenditures of grant monies and complete reporting requirements
