Purpose: Reporting to the Dean of Faculty, the Director of Library Services works to support the research and curricular needs of the college community through the library. This involves the performance of professional and administrative duties in planning, developing, implementing, and directing the services provided by the library. This is a full-time faculty position with an administrative appointment. The Director of Library Services is responsible for supporting the mission of the College by contributing to a comprehensive and holistic experience for our students. The Director of Library Services is also responsible for long-range planning and policy development, managing all library resources, including human resources, material acquisition, access, storage and control of collections, designing and implementing services and programs for the range of library users, overseeing the maintenance and safety of the physical plant, and building positive relationships within the campus and local community. Facilitation of student success and fostering a dynamic learning environment through active collaborations with faculty, student life personnel, and other constituents of the campus community are important responsibilities of the Director of Library Services.
Essential Job Duties:
- Supervise the administration of the library.
- Supervise library staff, coordinate activities and absences, and arrange for appropriate training and technical support.
- Provide communication to staff regarding actions and decisions of administration and the Board of Trustees.
- Supervise the acquisitions, cataloging, and preparing for circulation of all library holdings.
- Take responsible precautions for the preservation and safeguarding of all books, documents, equipment, and other library property.
- Oversee programs that ensure the library’s constituencies are well-trained in library-based resources and information systems.
- Call and chair meetings of the library staff and the library committees.
- Issue periodic lists of recent and important acquisitions in the library.
- Prepare, submit, and supervise the annual departmental budget.
- Collaborate with colleagues to determine learning resource needs; participate in appropriate college committees.
- Prepare annual reports for the Dean and the Board of Trustees, as requested.
- Serve as the representative and/or contact person for Holy Cross College to organizations in which Holy Cross College’s McKenna Library has membership.
- Maintain a close, collaborative relationship with other Indiana Academic Libraries, and particularly the University of Notre Dame libraries.
- Continuously monitor the vision of how the library serves the campus community.
- Maintain communications and memberships as appropriate with professional associations.
- Responsible for ensuring adherence to applicable federal and state laws and college policies and procedures within their area of authority.
- Ensure that required reports for federal and state agencies and internal needs are completed accurately and in a timely manner.
- Be a standing member of the Dean’s Team, representing the library and facilitating communication between academics and the library.
