Butler University is seeking a collaborative and engaged professional for the position of Digital Collections Librarian. Reporting to the Head of Special Collections, the successful candidate will lead the curation of Special Collections materials into digital collections; engage in information literacy instruction in select disciplines; and supervise the Digital Scholarship Associate who oversees digitization in the library. The person in this position will also assist in department leadership by developing policies and procedures related to digital collections, evaluate digital collection discovery and preservation platforms, manage digital collection platform migrations as needed, advise on digital collection metadata, and oversee digital collection preservation.

The ideal candidate will have relevant professional skills and experience; an interest in the growth, preservation, and accessibility of digital special collections; an interest in information literacy instruction; and a willingness to collaborate with staff, faculty, and administration within the Libraries and across the University. In addition, this person will have knowledge and understanding of issues related to physical and digital preservation, care and handling, and copyright of archival and special collection materials, as well as an understanding of the information needs of online digital collection users.

Responsibilities

  • In collaboration with the Head of Special Collections and other library colleagues, set priorities for digital collections and exhibit projects.
  • Using the appropriate digital asset management software, set up and add resources to digital collections and exhibits in collaboration with the Cataloging & Metadata Specialist and the Metadata Assistant.
  • Lead the evaluation and testing of digital asset management software and digital collection migrations when needed.
  • Supervise the Digital Scholarship Associate, who manages digitization and related activities in our Digital Scholarship Lab.
  • Develop and refine digital collection policies and guidelines and project workflows.
  • Lead the Libraries’ digital preservation efforts and participate in local/statewide efforts.
  • Promote the Libraries’ digital collections and exhibits both within and outside of Butler University.
  • Participate in Butler Libraries’ liaison librarian program, providing instruction and research support for selected academic departments.
  • Fulfill expectations for Butler library faculty in areas of librarianship, service, scholarship and professional activity.

Butler librarians have faculty status on a 6-year continuing appointment (non-tenure track) basis. Appointment level will be made appropriate to experience and/or status.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library science program
  • Experience working with archival or special collection materials, including born digital materials
  • Experience with digital asset management systems
    Awareness of digitization processes and workflows
    Awareness of digital preservation standards, workflows, and tools
  • Knowledge of issues related to copyright in archives and digital collections
  • Knowledge of established and emerging standards relating to descriptive, structural, and technical metadata and controlled vocabularies
  • Excellent planning, analytical, interpersonal, supervisory, project management, and organizational skills
  • Ability to communicate with technical and non-technical individuals and to prepare project documentation to support training and best practices guidelines
  • Must be flexible, self-motivated, detail-oriented, and capable of learning new systems and tools, with good teamwork skills, a strong service orientation, and a demonstrated commitment to staff development and diversity in the workplace
  • Demonstrated aptitude to engage in publication and professional service to meet library faculty continuing appointment and promotion requirements

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters-level or continuing education in archives, digital collections, or digital preservation.
  • Experience with migrating existing digital collections to a new digital asset management system.
  • Experience with user testing and promotion of digital collections and exhibits.
  • Skills in customizing digital collection and exhibit displays
