Associate Director of Development
Full-time, Executive – Exempt
Reports to: Director
Starting Salary: $48,735.00
The education requirement is a BA and at least 2-3 years of grant writing experience and writing solicitation letters.
General Summary
- Plans, executes, and evaluates fundraising efforts to support the strategic plan of the East Chicago Public Library.
- Coordinates annual appeals, donor cultivation, and special donor events.
- Lead grant research and writing.
- Collaborates with library staff and East Chicago Public Library.
- This position will work closely with the Library Director and will be under the general supervision of the Library Director.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
Expand and diversify donor base and prospect pipeline.
Identify and research potential supporters.
Develop cultivation strategies for specific donors.
Collaborate with the Library Director and Library Board of Trustees to formulate fundraising strategies and specific projects/goals.
Coordinate fundraising efforts, including but not limited to: Annual giving campaigns and
Gift acknowledgements.
Cultivating donors and sponsorships.
Researching grant opportunities and assist in preparation of applications.
Manage fundraising database; process and acknowledge gifts.
Supervise the planning and execution of special events.
Produce reports as needed.
Keep abreast of current trends in nonprofit fundraising.
Strong customer service skills of clear, professional, and regular communication
(verbal and written)
Adaptability i.e., adjusts nimbly to obstacles or changes.
Proactive initiative to accomplish goals.
Development of good relationships with staff, leadership, and donors through
positive interpersonal interactions.
Protect library users’ and donors’ right to privacy and confidentiality with respect to
information sought or received, and resources consulted, borrowed, acquired, or
transmitted.
Gather and formulate statistics for annual reporting and grants.
Required to be Librarian in Charge of building at both locations.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of the principles and practices of the development profession, including
research techniques and resources in the fields of philanthropy and libraries.
Familiar with fundraising software/platforms, Microsoft Office products, and modern
office technology.
Experience with online communications for solicitation, including email, online
newsletters, surveys, and social media.
Understanding of public libraries and their function within the community.
Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
Highly organized with strong planning skills.
Careful attention to detail.
Ability to work well with donors, potential donors, staff, and Board members.
Requirements
Education, License, Certification, Experience, and Training
Bachelor’s Degree of Library Science from an ALA accredited university program
Two-Three years of grant writing experience and writing solicitation letters.
Extensive knowledge of current trends and practices in reference services, reference
sources and information literacy.
Extensive knowledge of cutting-edge library technology.
5+ years of relevant direct professional experience in nonprofit fundraising & donor
development.
Familiarity with the diverse communities of East Chicago.
Must meet the requirements to qualify for Indiana Library Certification 2 or 1; to qualify for recertification, must complete a minimum of 75 Library Educational Units every 5 years, as
specified by the Indiana State Library.
Possession of a valid Indiana driver’s license or evidence of equivalent mobility.
Physical and Mental Requirements
Lift, push and pull 20 lbs.
Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities, which permits the employee to communicate effectively.
Sufficient clarity of vision or other powers of observation which permits the employee to
produce and review a wide variety of technical and training materials, written correspondence, reports and related materials in both electronic and hard copy formats.
Sufficient manual dexterity to operate a standard keyboard and computer mouse or equivalent.
Sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes which permits the employee to monitor and supervise library operations at all library locations on a regular basis.
Must be able to remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time; move about inside and around the library.
