All libraries face catalysts for change, and rather than being afraid of change, with effective consideration of the personal aspects felt by staff or patrons, libraries can change many things at the same time. Butler University Libraries had already made progressive changes in public services areas, but Technical Services workflows and organization remained unchanged and bound to legacy practices from decades past. For us, the best catalyst for change was a system migration to a cloud-based library management system. This system migration was tied to organizational restructuring, building rearrangement, and a new strategic plan, each of which intertwined with the details of the migration project and was underpinned by thoughtful analysis of how to help employees through change. Research on technical services departments is discussed in light of how roles change through the streamlined workflows available in a new ILS, and how those changes can have a domino effect, creating space or opportunity to shift responsibilities or spaces in ways long awaited or newly identified. Join us to learn how changes can help refocus a library’s efforts to fulfill what can be an evolving mission, while retaining core strengths and values. This webinar, while delivered by an academic librarian, will also be useful to public libraries wanting to work through big changes.

From inception to completion, two librarians share their experiences with an IMLS Sparks grant. Shawnee Branch of Allen County Public Library received $23,421 to encourage positive interactions between adults and their young children and promote early learning. The webinar will briefly outline the opiate, HIV and HCV epidemics across the country. We will then focus in on identifying overdoses and administration of naloxone (the opioid or opiate overdose reversal drug, commonly known as NARCAN). We will briefly discuss the laws that fully protect those administering naloxone and over 40 years of evidence showing the safety and effectiveness of naloxone. The webinar will wrap up with information about sharps recycling options and addictions treatment. This webinar is eligible for 1 LEU when watched in conjunction with the second video below.

How One Library Evolved to Fit the Technology Needs of Their Community…In 2015 the Plainfield-Guilford Township Public Library had an all-too-familiar problem to solve: how to fulfill the need for technology help in the community. While they previously offered formal computer classes, the library found that customers were wanting technology help on their terms. The technology team at the library took a step back and decided to take a very informal approach to tackle the problem, and thus “Digital Drop In” was born. “Digital Drop In” is a weekly 2-hour window where people can come in with any and all technology questions, and team with tech-savvy library staff are available to help as best they can. From old answering machines to brand new tablets and laptops, and from quick questions to weekly visitors, the “Digital Drop In” has been a great success and has eliminated the library’s need for traditional computer classes.
